Independent Fundraiser: Olivia Fryt
Event: Austin Marathon runner

Q: Why did you decide to raise funds and/or awareness for Heroes and Horses?

A: It really boils down to that I just love Heroes and Horses’ mission; it really resonates with me on a personal level. I have quite a few family members and good friends who are in the military, and I love them and are so thankful for the sacrifices that they and their fellow service members have made and continue to make on a daily basis for me and the rest of the country. Even more personally, I chose H&H in honor of my grandfather who was career military (in the Army) and ultimately retired at the rank of Sergeant Major after serving in WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Although not diagnosed, it is believed that he suffered in the aftermath, along with many of his comrades. It’s important to me to provide real, meaningful and successful support to ailing service members, which Heroes and Horses does in such a wonderful and unique way!

Q: Tell us a little bit about your fundraiser?

A: I was a charity runner for H&H in the 2018 Austin Marathon and attempted to get sponsors to donate in support. Overall, I trained for about 5 months yet only fundraised for around 3 months (which I would have done differently in retrospect – I wish I would have fundraised for all 5 months).

Q: What would be your #1 tip to other people interested in doing an independent fundraiser for H&H?

A: My primary piece of advice is to not be timid about fundraising. This was my first time doing an independent fundraiser for any organization, and I wanted it to be really successful for H&H which in turn made me incredibly nervous about it failing. Because I didn’t want it to fail, I was both intimidated to start asking for donations and apprehensive to execute some of my ideas for fundraising. I think that had I been somewhat bolder and carried out some of my fundraising ideas despite my fears, I may have actually been a bit more successful. Nevertheless, fundraising for H&H was an incredible experience and I hope to do it again in the future!
